What is HypnoBirthing?

Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® is a simple, straightforward program, thoughtfully developed over the years to remind mothers of the simplicity of birth itself. Just as the majority of birthing women do not need interventions and procedures for safe and healthy birth, they do not need a complex set of exercises and scripts to prepare themselves for peaceful, calm and comfortable birthing. The birthing body and the baby know just what to do. Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® is designed to teach women to trust in Nature’s way of birth and to relax and let their bodies do what is needed. By practicing a few key techniques, mothers program their minds and condition their bodies to birth easily. When it comes to programming and conditioning, variety is not necessarily a good thing. Repetition is what gets the best result.

Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique.  The method teaches you that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony – as they were designed to – when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.

When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire. 

You will be conversant and in good spirits – totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

So why choose a HypnoBirthing class?

You already possess an innate ability for calm and gentle birthing; HypnoBirthing simply teaches you how to unlock it. One of the best things about HypnoBirthing, is that you cannot fail at it! There is no “right” way to HypnoBirth. Frequently Asked Questions

+ When should I start classes?

Anytime after your first trimester! This course is designed for pregnancy, labor, birthing and tools for the rest of your life. The latest you'd want to start a series is 33 weeks since it's a 5 week course.

+ Does my partner need to attend? What if I don’t have a partner?

ALL types of families are welcome in class! Partners are encouraged to attend as it will make a significant impact on their confidence in supporting your labor and birth, however it is not required. I aim to be accommodating which is why I offer weeknight and weekend classes. If a partner can only attend a few classes, that is better than nothing and the first class is especially important. No partner? No problem - feel free to bring any other support person such as family, friend, doula, etc.

+ Will hypnobirthing help if i am planning or need a medicated birth including cesarean?

YES!! The relaxation tools learned in class allow you to stay calm and focused prior to receiving planned medications and also to make confident decisions if your birthing necessitates a need for medication. Even the daily relaxation practice you will engage in will help baby be happy and healthier, regardless of how their birth story unfolds. HypnoBirthing is also a set of life skills - key techniques that will serve you well on your continued journey into parenthood!

+ How do I know if HypnoBirthing is for me?

The knowledge gained in this class can be used by ANYONE. We all enter into a state of hypnosis 10-15 times a day, so it's something your mind and body are already used to doing. One of the huge benefits of an in person class is that I can customize the program to the way you learn best, and troubleshoot with you if things aren't quite clicking!

+ Will I have a pain free birth?

No one can make any guarantees about the way your birth will unfold, including how much pain you experience. It has been proven, however, that HypnoBirthing classes greatly REDUCE the amount the pain you experience as well as transform the way you experience pain in labor. In fact HypnoBirthing students report using an epidural only 23% of the time compared to the national average of 71%.

My focus for this class is not so much on eliminating pain entirely (which is always possible) but moreso to allow you and baby to have a confident, more joyful, and positive birth.

+ How much do classes cost?

Group classes: $400

+ are classes covered by insurance?

Maybe! You can use FSA/HSA accounts to pay for class, and I also provide receipts with insurance codes to submit for reimbursement upon request. Call your insurance carrier and ask if your plan covers patient education classes.

Below are the start dates for each upcoming series, which will meet at the same day/time for 5 consecutive weeks, unless otherwise noted. We recommend starting a series anytime after your first trimester to have enough time to absorb all the juicy info and master the techniques; however it’s never TOO early or late to start so when in doubt, feel free to get in touch to see if the timing will work for your guess date! Pre-registration and deposit are required to hold your spot.
