Postpartum Doula
It’s often called “The Fourth Trimester” for a reason. Those early weeks following the birth of a child are tender and sacred, much like pregnancy and birth, and deserve the same special care. It used to be that our villages and communities surrounded us with support after birth - bringing food, cleaning the home, offering wisdom, and showing new parents the ways to care for their little one. In modern times, most of us don’t live near our families once we begin creating our own, or sometimes our families are simply unequipped (or unwilling) to offer the support we truly need. The support given by friends, coworkers, and other acquaintances is infrequent or inadequate, as so many people aren’t equipped to provide loving, non-judgmental, and helpful support. So it’s time we create our own village!
Hiring a postpartum doula is one of the best things you can do for your family’s long term physical and mental health. Research shows that birthing people who receive adequate postpartum support have increased breastfeeding rates, greater self-confidence, and fewer postpartum mood disorders. Postpartum doula support provides practical assistance with newborn baby care, lactation/bottle feeding, laundry, dishes, meal preparation, light cleaning, and more. They also offer emotional support during this transition (much like a birth doula), and will validate your experience while offering any advice or resources you desire. Some postpartum doulas also offer overnight support, to help your family get more sleep!
